Current changes and closures:

Major weekend traffic changes – May 2019

To enable pavement construction at the intersection of Cooksley Street and Kingsford Smith Drive, major construction activities are required.

To reduce the impact and duration of ongoing night work on local residents, the project team will undertake installation of new pavement over a weekend in late May 2019.

Traffic changes on Kingsford Smith Drive and lane closures at the Cooksley Street intersection will be required from 7pm Friday 24 May to 5am Monday 27 May 2019.

During this period, Kingsford Smith Drive will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Agnes Street and Toorak Road, with two lanes maintained in each direction during peak times on Saturday.

Please see map below for more information.

Changed traffic conditions – Agnes Street to Toorak Road

From mid-May 2019 for approximately four months, works will be carried out to upgrade the northern verge of Kingsford Smith Drive between Agnes Street and Toorak Road.

Activities to be completed on the northern verge will include drainage works, installation of new pavement, kerb, and underground services, works on private properties, reconstruction of driveways and landscaping.

Traffic changes

To accommodate these works, from 5pm Sunday 12 May to 5am Monday 13 May 2019, temporary traffic barriers in the centre median will be removed and relocated to the northern side of Kingsford Smith Drive, between Agnes Street and Toorak Road.

The implementation of this traffic arrangement will enable the majority of the works to be undertaken during standard construction hours. Due to traffic permit requirements, some of the works must be completed during night shift between 7pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday.

As part of this traffic arrangement, two outbound lanes will remain on Kingsford Smith Drive between Agnes Street and Cooksley Street, with three outbound lanes maintained at the Cooksley Street intersection.

Access to Kingsford Smith Drive from both the Inner City Bypass (ICB) and Breakfast Creek Road will remain open, with one lane entering onto Kingsford Smith Drive from Breakfast Creek Road and one lane from the ICB.

From Sunday 26 May 2019, the inbound lanes on Kingsford Smith Drive will be increased to three lanes between Cooksley Street and Agnes Street, with one lane exiting to Breakfast Creek Road and two lanes exiting to the ICB.

Temporary bus stop closure

As part of this traffic change, the existing outbound bus stop (Kingsford Smith Drive at Cooksley Street, stop 13/14) will be closed. Regular services can be accessed from stop 15, Kingsford Smith Drive at Toorak Road for the duration of these works.

Temporary footpath closure

From Sunday 12 May 2019, a section of the northern footpath between Hunt Street and Cooksley Street will be closed for up to four weeks to allow footpath, verge and landscaping works to be undertaken.

Access for pedestrians will be maintained via Yulestar Street. Additional signage will be in place to direct pedestrians.

Access to Kingsford Smith Drive from local roads

The following local access changes will be required to enable these works:

  • The left turn onto Kingsford Smith Drive from Hunt Street will permanently
  • The left turn onto Kingsford Smith Drive from Agnes Street will temporarily

The left turn into both Agnes Street and Hunt Street from Kingsford Smith Drive will be maintained.

Additional signage will be installed to help motorists and pedestrians navigate around the work area.

Night works and temporary traffic changes – Harbour Road to Theodore Street, Hamilton

From mid-April until late June 2019, night works will be carried out intermittently on Kingsford Smith Drive between Harbour Road and Theodore Street, Hamilton.

These night works will allow the project to complete construction east of Harbour Road by mid-2019. Once these works are complete, Kingsford Smith Drive will open to three lanes of traffic in each

direction between Harbour Road and Theodore Street, Hamilton.

These works will involve lane closures on Kingsford Smith Drive, and temporary traffic changes

including the temporary closures of side roads in mid-May. Each side road will be closed for one night shift (7pm to 5am). These traffic changes are intended to occur in May 2019 in numerical order as

outlined overleaf. Traffic will be detoured around the closures with traffic controllers and signage to

assist motorists. See map overleaf for details.

These works will also involve temporary driveway restrictions for properties with direct access to Kingsford Smith Drive. Impacted properties will be notified directly ahead of these works.

Pedestrian access will be maintained through the work site at all times.

In the event of wet weather or unforeseen circumstances, these works may be extended.

Changed traffic conditions – Racecourse Road to Harbour Road, Hamilton

In late September 2018, works will begin to upgrade the northern side of Kingsford Smith Drive between Racecourse Road and Seymour Road. These works are expected to continue for approximately 12 months.

To accommodate these works, vehicles will be moved onto the newly-constructed southern lanes of Kingsford Smith Drive. Additional signage will be installed to help motorists navigate through the work area.

A service road will be constructed on the northern side of Kingsford Smith Drive, allowing vehicles to access local businesses and properties. Entry and exit points will be clearly signed.

Pedestrian access to businesses and properties will be maintained through the work site. Driveway access will be maintained, under the direction of traffic control where required.

See map below for details of traffic changes.

Temporary road closure – Riverview Terrace, Hamilton

From Monday 23 July 2018 for up to ten months, Riverview Terrace will be closed to traffic in both directions, at Kingsford Smith Drive.

This closure is required to allow for the installation of stormwater infrastructure and new underground services, and construction of the new road pavement.

Closing Riverview Terrace allows the project team to achieve greater productivity and carry out the majority of these works during the day.

During this period, right turn access to Riverview Terrace from Kingsford Smith Drive will be provided via Seymour Road.

Traffic will be detoured around the closure with additional signage installed to help motorists and pedestrians navigate around the work area.
