Timeline and staging

Outlined below is the full alignment map for the Kingsford Smith Drive upgrade.

The upgrade is now underway and is expected to be completed in 2019.

West Stage 1 – mid-2016 to late 2016

Work to upgrade northern footpath

  • Remove a small number of trees
  • Remove the centre median
  • Lay temporary asphalt
  • Widen the northern footpath
  • Service relocation (water, gas, Energex, etc.)
  • Closure of Cameron Rocks Reserve and temporary removal of war memorial after Anzac Day
  • Begin work at Bretts Wharf, including closure of the car park.

West Stage 2 – late 2016 to mid-2018

Work on southern side

  • Move traffic, pedestrians and cyclists to northern side
  • Remove a small number of trees
  • Closure of existing shared user path and start of construction on new river walk structure, including retaining wall
  • Service installation (stormwater, gas, Energex, etc.)
  • Piling at Bretts Wharf and along riverfront
  • War memorial reinstated at Cameron Rocks Reserve by Anzac Day 2017.

West Stage 3 – mid-2018 to late 2018

Work in centre median and on river walk structure

  • Westbound traffic moved to riverside
  • Pavement works in new median
  • Service installation
  • River walk structure construction.

West Stage 4 – late 2018 to 2019

Work on northern side

  • Remove a small number of trees
  • Install new services (water main, Energex, gas, etc.)
  • Road pavement works
  • New northern footpath construction
  • Install new street lighting and kerb
  • Stormwater installation
  • Build bus stops
  • River walk open to community
  • Cameron Rocks Reserve construction.

West Stage 5 – 2019

Finishing activities

  • Eastbound traffic moved to new northern side
  • Work on new centre median including traffic island works
  • Landscaping
  • Lighting
  • Complete all road surfacing and final line marking.

Final configuration

Works completed

  • Three lanes in each direction
  • A new river walk segregated cycle path with dedicated rest areas
  • Continuous footpaths on both side of the road with improved footpath widths
  • A tree-lined boulevard creating a subtropical entry into Brisbane.

East Stage 1 – mid-2016 to late 2016

Work to upgrade centre median

  • Remove centre median trees
  • Service relocation (water main, Energex, gas etc.)
  • Remove the centre median
  • Lay temporary asphalt.

East Stage 2 – late 2016 to late 2017

Work on southern side

  • Move traffic, pedestrians and cyclists to northern side
  • Service relocation including stormwater
  • Retaining walls at Harbour and Remora Roads
  • Selected tree removal
  • Right turn out of Harbour Road closed
  • Curtin Avenue West closed at Remora Road
  • Road pavement works.

East Stage 3 – late 2017 to mid-2018

Work in centre median

  • Westbound traffic moved to southern side
  • Pavement works in new median
  • Intersection reconstruction.

East Stage 4 – mid-2018 to 2019

Work on northern side

  • Move traffic to southern side
  • Install new services (water main, Energex, gas, etc.)
  • Road pavement works
  • New northern footpath construction
  • Install new kerbs
  • Build bus stops
  • Intersection reconstruction.

East Stage 5 – 2019
